Last Saturday, parishioners and friends from the community had some flour-filled fun with local sourdough expert Eva Lee.
Eva and a few of her sourdough followers from Lynn Valley's online Buy Nothing Group, a Facebook-based neighbourhood community that freely gives and receives gifts of goods, time and wisdom, led the fledgling bread-makers through the steps to mix and fold their sourdough bread. In between folds there was time to learn about shaping and "scoring" the loaves (scoring is the art of making cuts in the top of the loaf to allow for expansion as well as add to the visual appeal).
There was also plenty of time to enjoy the other sourdough snacks Eva had made, including delicious chocolate cookies and gourmet crackers.
Everyone went home with dough for two loaves, a kit of tools, and their own jar of starter to keep the creative baking journey going at home. Participants were later proud to show photos of their fresh-from-the-over loaves in a Messenger group they created in order to keep sharing tips and encouragement.
Thank you, Eva and friends, for putting our new kitchen to use in such a community-building way!
