Most people have a general idea of what a priest is - but how about a deacon? This ancient order of ordained ministry has enjoyed a revitalization in the past few decades across the Church, but the role is still somewhat unfamiliar to many people.

Inspired by a special Sunday morning service taking place at Christ Church Cathedral on February 1, Archbishop John is encouraging other parishes to hold their own Deacon Sunday - on that day, or another Sunday soon.

Clergy who wish may contact the Ven. Peggy Trendell-Jensen, Archdeacon for Deacons, for ideas on crafting their own Deacon Sunday. Parishes without a deacon can request a "loaner deacon" who can participate in the liturgy, talk about the diaconate during or after the service, and if appropriate offer to preach that day.

Brochures on the diaconate are available from the Synod office, or may be downloaded below. A short video created by a local diaconal postulant, "Ministering Beyond the Walls," is also linked below and is a great introduction to the unique vocation of a deacon, providing a good springboard to further discussion.

Archdeacon Peggy will preach at the Cathedral on February 1, and along with the Rev. Deacons Alistair Smith and Kevin de la Mare will lead a 40-Minute Forum on the diaconate between the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services. All are welcome.

Other information about becoming a deacon is available here on the Diocesan website, by speaking with your parish clergy, or by contacting Archdeacon Peggy.
