I come from Tl’azt’en Nation, which translates to ‘People at the edge of the bay’. I am Lhts’umusyoo/Beaver Clan. I come from strong, kind, caring, compassionate, resilient, and resourceful people; therefore I am. I have been a helper for my whole life, both as a profession and just a helping human. Growing up I didn’t hear of Indian Residential Schools or the intergenerational trauma that came along with it, it was just a part of our lives as we knew it. When I learned of the Indian Residential Schools and its detrimental affects to our people, I knew I had to help, my family, my community, my people, our people. I started as a Youth Worker for my nation and again later at Urban Native Youth Association in Vancouver. I also worked on the DTES for over 7 years as a Mental Health Worker. Further, I have experience in working as an Addiction/Wellness Counsellor for a few years, while completing my Degree in Indigenous Holistic Wellness and Addictions. When I first came to IRSSS, I was hired as a Trauma Informed Cultural Support Worker, then quickly moved to Trauma Informed Cultural Support Coordinator for Vancouver Coastal Region, which consisted of responding to community and urban requests from individuals and organizations for cultural and emotional support for Survivors and their families. I am now excited to be working on the Podcast Project. Snachailya’
