On Sunday, November 3 we will remember all in the communion of saints, and the souls known to us who now rest in God's eternal light.

If you would like the name of a departed loved one read out loud during the period of remembrance, please sign the book at the back of the church. There will be a chance for congregants to light a memorial candle during the service on November 3.

Did you know "hallow" is an old English term for "saint"? All Hallow's Eve - the day prior to All Saints' Day on November 1 - became, of course, "Halloween." The third day in this autumnal triuduum is All Souls' Day on November 2, when we remember and pray for our dearly beloved who have gone before us. On this Sunday we will celebrate the saints, remember the departed by name, and light a candle for those close to our hearts at this time. It's a very special time during the darkening days of the year, recognized as one of those "thin places" in which heaven and earth draw closer together than ever.

You might celebrate the occasion at home by making a batch of soul cakes, which used to be given out at the door to children and the hungry who would come to the door begging for these treats in the name of the dead. It was said by some that each cake given out would release a soul from purgatory! As you may have guessed, this is understood to be the origin of our modern-day trick-or-treating custom. Here's a recipe right here if you would like to keep the tradition alive!
